Product information "TM NH4+/NH3 test"
Ammonium is the result of nitrogen mineralisation, in which bound nitrogen from feed residues and excrements is converted into NH4+ by bacteria. Depending on the pH value, there is a balance between ammonium ions NH4+ and ammonia NH3 in water. At pH-values below 7, the largely harmless ammonium ions dominate, whereas at pH-values above 7 ammonia increasingly occurs. Ammonia is very dangerous as it impairs the respiration of living organisms. With the Tropic Marin® Ammonium/Ammonia Test, a total ammonium/ammonia concentration of 0.02 to 3 mg/l can be determined using a finely tuned colour scale. However, the pure ammonia concentration is decisive for harmlessness in the aquarium water. This concentration results from the total ammonium/ammonia concentration depending on the temperature and the pH value. If the pH value is known, the ammonia concentration of the water can be read off in a table.
