Lake Tanganyika is the second largest lake in Africa and the second deepest lake on earth. The lake is home to over 300 species of fish. The pH is around 8, the water is very rich in minerals. Many perches are mouth breeders. The most important genera are Aulonocra, Cyphotilapoa, Cyprichromis, Julidochromis, Nealoamprologus, Altolamprologus and Tropheus as well as Xenotilapia.
